Project Titus -- Georgia: Look Out for Fire Ants!
Look out for Fire Ants!
Up in Saginaw we don’t have to worry about fire ants. Down in Georgia, they are pretty common. Get rid of them or heal the fiery sting they leave. Three guys (Wes Towne, Paul Mattes, Nate Plocher) and three girls (Chelsea Yerks, Maria Prange, Meredith Shaffer) had the task of poisoning fire ants. It was our first evening in Pooler, Georgia. We had flown into the Savannah, GA airport just a few minutes away earlier that day and were preparing for soccer camp on Risen Savior Lutheran Church’s eight acre site. Pastor Borgwardt also had us set up a couple of sun covers for the Monday, June 7 6-8:30 p.m. Soccer/Bible camp.
Pastor outlined our tasks for what skills to teach over the next four days. He also introduced what kind of devotional skits we would use to develop the “World Cup” theme for the camp.
Monday at four we joined seven members of Risen Savior to eat and plan the evening’s activities. 34 children ages 4-11 came and returned the next three evenings, as well. There was a lot of fun, learning about soccer and the Lord Jesus that took place in those days.
The members of Risen Savior gave us varied Southern and somewhat traditional meals. The girls stayed with the Borgwardts and the guys at the Van Scooter home.
Daytime activities for our MLS students included swimming in neighborhood pools, going to Tybee Beach on the Atlantic Ocean, visiting Jerusalem Church in Rincon to see the home of the Salzburg Lutherans (driven out of their homes in Germany—now Austria—In 1731 and settled near Savannah in 1734). We enjoyed the historic city of Savannah and its Riverfront shopping, too.
Soccer/Bible camp was not the only ministry activity at Pooler. We canvassed and passed out fliers in neighborhoods near the church. On Sunday morning we were able to sing Day by Day to Nate’s playing during the service. Professor Bode (our MLS chaperone) preached on John 3:16.
Thanks to good foresight the stings of fire ants were never a problem. Thanks to our God’s grace we had the privilege to share the antidote to fight the sting of sin in the lives of the children at the Risen Savior Soccer/Bible Camp.
